3 Home Upgrades That Are Cheaper to Add Now vs Later

Some upgrades are way easier and more affordable to add while your home is still under construction. Once drywall goes up or concrete is set, these same features get a lot more expensive. If you're in the planning stage, don’t skip these three must-haves that are budget-friendly to include upfront and a pain to retrofit later.

Extended Concrete Around the House

A little extra concrete goes a long way. Extending your concrete walkways around the sides and back of the house means no more stepping through grass or mud to take out the trash, access storage, or check on the AC unit. It’s great for kids riding scooters, makes mowing easier, and keeps dirt from tracking into the house.

Add Outlets (Everywhere)

Outlets can be added later, but they’re so much cheaper during framing when the electrician is already running wires and the walls are open. Closet outlets are great for charging vacuums. In-floor outlets in an office or living room keep cords hidden. Yard outlets are a must if you go big on Christmas lights. And don’t forget exterior outlets for pressure washers or electric mowers.

Pro tip: Before the drywall goes up, take a video of every room. You’ll have a visual map of outlet locations, wiring, and framing so you know what’s behind the walls if you ever want to upgrade later.

Interior Wall Insulation

Most people assume insulation is included throughout the house, but that’s not the case. Interior insulation isn’t standard and it’s usually only on exterior walls unless you ask for more. You’ll want it in bedrooms, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and any space that needs soundproofing. If you’re using the garage for a gym or workshop, insulate those walls and garage door too. We’re big fans of Rockwool Safe’n’Sound for its sound-blocking and fire-resistant properties.

Plan Now, Save Later

All of these tips are included in the Ultimate Home Building Checklist. It’s packed with things homeowners wish they added earlier, common upgrades people forget, and smart details that can save you thousands in change orders or do-overs.

Whether you’re building from scratch or remodeling a space, go through the checklist before you finalize anything. You’ll walk into your new home knowing you nailed the little things that make a big difference.
