Building a new home is filled with decisions, some of which can cost you thousands if you overlook them early in the process. Here are a few that homeowners often forget:

Hot Water Hose Bib

A hot water hose bib is a game-changer for homeowners who want the convenience of warm water outdoors. Whether you need to wash your car in the winter, rinse off dirty pets, or clean outdoor furniture, having access to hot water outside is a must have!

If you plan for it during the early stages of construction, it’s a simple $400 upgrade. But if you decide later that you want one, the cost can balloon to $1,200 due to additional labor, drywall patching, and plumbing modifications.

Interior Bedroom Insulation

Adding interior insulation to bedrooms is a must for soundproofing. If you’ve ever been woken up by a noisy TV or loud conversations from another room, you know how valuable peace and quiet can be.

When done during the framing stage, it costs around $600. But if you decide later that you need sound insulation, it jumps to $2,000 because it requires tearing into finished walls.

A Garage Deep Enough for Your Truck

Standard garages are often designed for compact vehicles, leaving little room for larger trucks, extra storage, or even a workbench.

Unlike other upgrades, this can’t be fixed later without a massive, expensive renovation. Once the foundation is poured and the framing is up, you’re stuck with the dimensions you chose.

Laundry Room Placement

Where you place your laundry room makes a huge difference in functionality. Having your washer and dryer on an exterior wall allows for shorter, more efficient venting.

A poorly placed laundry room can mean long, inefficient vent runs, which slow down drying times, increase the risk of lint buildup, and can even create fire hazards.

Overwhelmed by Too Many Decisions?

The list of potential oversights goes on, and the costs can easily exceed the $3,200 in avoidable expenses mentioned here. That’s why I created The Ultimate Home Building Checklist, a comprehensive guide that ensures you don’t overlook the small but significant details that can cost you big later.
