When building a new home or taking on a remodel, most people go with asphalt shingles on their roof. Choose 3-tab shingles or architectural shingles. They look different, perform differently, and can impact the long-term value of your home.

Don’t Use 3-Tab Shingles

You should not see 3-tab shingles on new home builds or remodels. These shingles have been around forever, but they’re thinner, flatter, and not nearly as durable. They give your roof a flat, uniform look that some people specifically want, but most homeowners find it plain compared to newer options.

3-tab shingles usually last 15–20 years and don’t hold up well in high winds. If your roofer tries to push these as the standard, it’s worth asking why.

Architectural Shingles Are Way Better

Architectural shingles are the standard for asphalt roofs. They cost a little more, but they’re well worth it. They’re thicker, have more texture, and mimic the look of higher-end materials like wood shakes or slate.

The big advantage is performance. Architectural shingles typically last 25–30 years or more, come with longer warranties, and have much better wind ratings. They’re more resistant to cracking and curling, and they simply look better on your home.

Don’t Let Your Roofer Give You Leftovers

One thing to watch out for is a roofer trying to use leftover 3-tab shingles just to clear out old inventory. If you’re going with an asphalt roof, architectural shingles are the smarter choice every time. They’ll cost a little more upfront, but the longer lifespan and stronger warranties make them the more economical choice in the long run.
