Pick The Right Bathtub For Your Home Build …

Whether you’re into long soaks or you just want a place to rinse off the kids, it’s worth thinking through your bathtub options before the plumbing goes in.

Built-In Bathtubs

Built-in tubs may not have the “wow” factor of a freestanding tub, but they’re hard to beat when it comes to practicality. These tubs are surrounded on one or more sides by a deck or tile, and that means there’s usually a ledge you can sit on. That comes in handy way more than you think.

Built-ins are also easier to clean. Water and soap tend to stay contained, and you don’t have to worry about trying to squeeze a mop behind the tub or wiping down every exposed surface (freestanding). The look is more traditional, but you can still make it feel modern with a beautiful surround or sleek faucet. If you’re not trying to turn your bathroom into a magazine spread and just want something functional that still looks good, this one checks the boxes.

Freestanding Tubs

Freestanding tubs are the kind of tubs you see in high-end builds and fancy hotel bathrooms. And they look pretty bad ass sitting in the middle of the room! If the bathroom layout allows for it and you’re going for that spa-like feel, freestanding is a strong contender.

But here’s the thing: if you like to sit on the edge of the tub, you’re going to be disappointed. Most freestanding tubs don’t have that flat ledge, and they’re usually a bit higher off the ground with curved edges. That makes them tricky to perch on and harder to climb in and out of.

Cleaning around a freestanding tub is another story. There’s usually open space behind it, which looks cool but now someone’s got to clean back there. Depending on the shape and placement, that can be a pain. Still, if your partner’s set on the freestanding look like mine (I already know Kippy’s going to pick it for our primary bath), then it’s one of those design choices you might just have to roll with.

The Forever Fiberglass Combo Tub

You’ve probably seen this one a hundred times in builder-grade homes. The combo tub is made from fiberglass and usually comes as a one-piece unit that includes a built-in shower surround. It’s not winning any awards for beauty, but it’s affordable, durable, and easy to install.

These are super common in secondary bathrooms and homes where function comes first. They’re not fancy, but they get the job done and they’re easy to clean because the entire unit is one solid piece with no tile grout or joints to deal with.

The downside? You’re limited in shape and style, and it doesn’t bring the luxury feel that some people want in a primary suite. But for a kids’ bathroom or guest space, it’s a totally solid choice.

Pick What Works for You

When it comes to picking the right tub, it really depends on how you plan to use it. Looks matter, but so does comfort and maintenance. And if you’re already in the planning phase of your build, now’s the time to get it right.
