It’s crazy how much one wall can change a bathroom.

I shared the same vanity with different wall treatments and asked which one people would choose: tile, wallpaper, paneling, or keeping it simple.

There were well over 200 responses, and two options clearly got most of the attention.

But some of the most useful advice actually had nothing to do with which wall treatment won.

Here’s what stood out.

Tile Was the Favorite

If I had to call a winner based on the comments, tile took it.

The biggest reason wasn’t just looks. A lot of people immediately brought up water.

This is a vanity. Water gets splashed around the sink, toothpaste gets on the wall, and eventually you’re going to have to clean it. That made tile an easy choice for a lot of people because it gives you a durable, wipeable surface behind the vanity.

People also liked the more finished, high-end look of the tile.

If I were going this route, though, I’d think carefully about how you finish the bottom.

Several people pointed out that they’d skip the traditional 4-inch countertop backsplash and run the tile all the way down to the countertop instead.

Personally, I like that look too.

If you’re paying for a full tile wall, I don’t think you need another little strip of countertop material running across the bottom of it.

Wallpaper Was a Very Close Second

Wallpaper had a LOT of fans.

People liked that it added color and pattern and made the bathroom feel a little less sterile.

And there’s another advantage I think is worth considering: You can change it.

Tile is a commitment. If you get tired of your tile five or ten years from now, changing it is a project. Wallpaper gives you the opportunity to completely change the look of the bathroom without tearing tile off the wall.

The obvious concern is moisture.

For a vanity wall, I’d choose a wallpaper and adhesive appropriate for a bathroom and make sure you have good ventilation. I’d be more cautious about wallpaper anywhere that gets directly and repeatedly soaked.

But for adding some personality behind a vanity?I can see why so many people picked it.

Paneling Had Fans, But Not Nearly as Many

Paneling definitely got votes, but it didn’t have the same support as tile or wallpaper.

I still think it can look great, especially if you want more architectural detail without adding a busy pattern.

The big thing I’d think about is maintenance.

Grooves and trim details give dust, hairspray, toothpaste, and everything else floating around a bathroom more places to collect.

If I were using paneling around a vanity, I’d make sure the material and finish can handle bathroom moisture and repeated cleaning.

Keeping It Simple Got Some Love Too

Not everyone wanted to add something to the wall.

A few people thought there was already enough going on between the vanity, countertop, flooring, mirror, and lighting.

That’s actually a good reminder.

You don’t need to turn every surface into a feature.

If your vanity or flooring is already doing a lot visually, a simple painted wall may be exactly what the room needs.

And if you want a little more interest, you can always choose a deeper paint color instead of adding another material.

The Mirror May Have Been More Controversial Than the Wall

This wasn’t even what I asked about, but people had opinions about that mirror.

A LOT of them.

Many thought it was too small for the vanity. Others didn’t like how it worked with the sconces, and several people thought changing the mirror would make a bigger difference than changing the wall.

And I think there’s a useful lesson there.

Don’t design the vanity wall one piece at a time.

Look at the vanity width, mirror size, sconces, countertop, backsplash, faucet, and wall treatment together. You can pick five beautiful things individually and still end up with a wall that doesn’t look right once they’re all next to each other.

So Which One Would I Pick?

For me, it would come down to what I wanted from the room.

If I wanted something durable, easy to wipe down, and more permanent, I’d probably choose tile.

If the bathroom needed color or personality and I wanted the option to change it later, I’d seriously consider wallpaper.

The biggest takeaway from the poll wasn’t really tile versus wallpaper. It was how many other decisions one vanity wall creates.

Those are exactly the kinds of decisions I want you thinking about before your bathroom is finished. That’s why I created the Ultimate Home Building Checklist. It helps you work through hundreds of details like these while you still have time to make changes instead of discovering them after you move in.
