6 Framing Tips to Add to Your Home

These six framing tips will not only improve functionality but also ensure your home is built to stand the test of time.

1. Sound Dampening Insulation

Don’t let the walls in your home echo like an empty concert hall. Add sound-dampening insulation, like Rockwool, to interior walls in bedrooms and bathrooms. This prevents noise from traveling, giving you a quieter and more private home. Without it, those walls will just be sheetrock—no insulation at all.

2. Tub Protection

A pristine tub shouldn’t have to survive construction chaos on its own. Protect it by covering it with OSB, taping it with zip tape to create a hinge, and adding foam padding underneath. This keeps contractors from accidentally dropping materials into the tub or scratching the finish.

3. Dedicated Network Closet

This small but mighty space keeps all your wiring—from routers to internet switches—organized and easily accessible. To future-proof your setup, run conduit (like blue Smurf tubing) from the TV area to the attic and back into this closet. That way, if you ever need to add speaker wires, upgrade cables, or reconfigure your tech, you’re covered.

4. Conduit (Smurf Tubing)

Speaking of Smurf tubing, it’s the unsung hero of modern homes. This conduit allows you to easily run cables to your TV or other devices without ripping into your walls. Run it from your entertainment center up into the attic or straight into your network closet. It’s simple, effective, and makes your home tech-friendly for life.

5. Blocking for TV Mounting

Planning to mount a TV above the fireplace? Make sure your builder adds blocking behind the drywall during framing. Scrap wood works great for this and provides a sturdy nailing surface. No need to play hide-and-seek with studs when it’s time to hang your TV.

6. Under-Stair Storage

Builders often close off the space under the stairs, but don’t let them! Utilize every square inch of your home by keeping this area open for storage. It’s perfect for seasonal items, cleaning supplies, or even a Pinterest-inspired nook.
