Before the drywall goes up, I’d make sure you’ve thought through these five things. A couple actually need to be planned even earlier.

A Floor Drain

This one needs to happen before drywall... way before.

If you want a floor drain, get it figured out before the garage slab is poured. It gives rain, melting snow, or water from washing out the garage somewhere to go instead of pooling on the floor.

Whether you can add one and where it drains will depend on your local codes and the way your site is designed, so bring it up with your builder early.

Ceiling Outlet

If you use your garage for projects, I love having a retractable extension cord reel overhead.

Yes, you probably already have a ceiling outlet for the garage door opener. I'd add another one near your actual work area.

While you're at it, think about any other equipment you may eventually mount up high (like a fan). It's cheap to put power there while your electrician is already wiring the garage.

Add a Hot-and-Cold Bib

If you like washing cars or cleaning equipment, I'd seriously consider hot and cold water inside the garage.

Pair it with a wall-mounted pressure washer setup and you've basically created your own little wash station.

A deep utility sink with hot and cold water is another option if you'd get more use out of that.

Dedicated Fridge Outlet

If you're putting a refrigerator or freezer in the garage, tell your electrician now.

Ask for a dedicated circuit (Doesn't share power with other outlets) so you never have to worry about a dead fridge. The last thing you want is a garage tool tripping the same breaker while you're gone and finding out everything in the fridge or freezer got warm.

This is also the time to decide exactly where that fridge is going so the outlet ends up behind it instead of six feet away.

Insulation

Don't assume your garage is getting insulated just because the rest of your house is.

I'd specifically ask what's included in the walls, ceiling, and garage doors. This matters even more if you plan to use the garage as a workshop, gym, hangout space, or anything besides parking.

Insulation can help with temperature and noise, and an insulated overhead door matters too because that door makes up a huge portion of the exterior wall.

One More I’d Add: An Attic Lift

If your attic access is in the garage, this is worth looking at.

An attic lift lets you load up Christmas totes, luggage, decorations, and other heavy storage and send it upstairs instead of wrestling everything up a pull-down ladder.

If you're already planning to use the attic for storage, I'd rather figure this out during construction than decide I want one after the garage ceiling is finished.

Plan the Garage Like You’ll Actually Use It

It's easy to treat the garage like the leftover room while you're focused on the kitchen, bathrooms, and everything inside the house.

I wouldn't.

You aren't going to remember every little detail during a build. That's exactly why I put upgrades like these into my Ultimate Home Building Checklist, organized by construction phase so you know what to ask for before they cover it up.
