The best outlets are the ones you never notice.
Here are a few I'd add to almost every build.
Switched Soffit Outlets
If you decorate for the holidays, this one's a game changer.
Ask your electrician to install outlets under the soffits and put them on a dedicated switch or timer. Your holiday lights turn on with the flip of a switch instead of relying on extension cords running across your porch and driveway.
Once you have them, you'll never want to decorate any other way.
Floor Outlets
Floor outlets aren't just for living rooms anymore.
I'd add one behind a reclining sofa, under a home office desk, or beside a floor lamp. They let you plug things in exactly where you use them instead of stretching cords across the room or rearranging furniture around the nearest wall outlet.
Just be sure you already know roughly where your furniture will go before placing them.
In the office, use one of these so you can keep your cord and ethernet cables from being stretched across the room.
Closet or Cabinet Outlet
This is one of my favorite hidden upgrades.
Install an outlet inside a closet or cabinet so your cordless vacuum can stay plugged in and fully charged without sitting out in the open. It keeps everything organized, ready to use, and out of sight.
You can also use these outlets for charging other small appliances or cleaning tools.
Garage Ceiling Outlet
If you've ever tripped over an extension cord, you'll appreciate this one.
A ceiling outlet lets you install a retractable extension cord reel, giving you power almost anywhere in the garage without cords running across the floor. It's perfect for projects, detailing your car, or working on equipment.
Label Your Electrical Panel
Here's one more tip that doesn't cost much but pays off for years.
Before your electrician finishes, ask them to clearly label every breaker in the electrical panel. You'd be surprised how many brand-new homes have vague labels that tell you almost nothing.
I usually ask something like, "Can you show me how everything is connected in the panel and which breaker controls what?"
Approaching it from a place of curiosity goes a long way. Most electricians take pride in their work and are happy to walk you through it when someone genuinely wants to learn.
The next time you need to shut off power for a repair or project, you'll be glad you took a few extra minutes.
Think Beyond the Standard Outlet
Most builders install enough outlets to meet code.
I'd rather install outlets that match the way you'll actually live in the house.
