Land clearing is one of the first major steps in building a new home. Before the first tree falls, here’s what you need to think through.
Remove Trees That Can Hit the House
One of the most overlooked safety considerations is how close trees are to the home. If a mature tree can fall and hit your roof, it’s too close. Talk to your builder before clearing begins and ask them to clear back trees that can possibly hit the house, at a minimum, at least 50 feet. A lot of new builds barely clear enough space for the structure itself, but that’s not enough when you consider storm damage, root spread, and long-term safety.

Mark the Trees You Want to Keep
If there are trees you love or want to keep for shade or privacy, you’ve got to be crystal clear about it. Tie flagging tape around each one so you don’t rely on verbal instructions alone. Once a tree is cut, there’s no putting it back. Be specific, walk the site with your builder or clearing crew, and mark everything you want to protect.

Plan for Future Structures
Even if you’re not ready to build that shed, greenhouse, or detached garage, now is the cheapest time to clear the land for it. Getting heavy equipment out to the site is expensive so while it’s already there, take advantage. Clear the space for any future buildings, outdoor features, or utility lines you know you’ll want. You don’t have to start the build now, but you’ll be thankful later when the groundwork is already done.

Add an Alternate Driveway
If your main driveway is going to be paved and finished nicely, you don’t want concrete trucks or heavy equipment tearing it up during construction. Plan a side-access or temporary gravel driveway just for work crews and deliveries. It protects your investment and keeps your home looking clean when it’s done.

Plan Ahead with the Checklist
These land clearing tips are just a small sample of what’s inside the Ultimate Home Building Checklist. Every step of construction is covered with practical reminders, upgrade suggestions, and things you’ll wish you thought of before it was too late. If you’re breaking ground soon, this stuff matters way more than people realize.
