Here are 6 upgrades you should know about.

Upgrade From a 1’ Filter to a 4- 5” Filter
A thicker media filter can capture more dust and particles without restricting airflow as quickly as a basic 1-inch filter.
You also won’t be changing it every couple of months. Depending on your system, household, pets, and air quality, many larger filters can last six to twelve months.
I’d still check it regularly, but this is one of those upgrades that makes maintenance easier while improving filtration.

Add a Whole-House Dehumidifier
If you live somewhere humid, I’d seriously consider this.
A whole-house dehumidifier connects to the ductwork and helps keep indoor humidity closer to the 45–50% range. That makes the house feel cooler and more comfortable without constantly lowering the thermostat.
It can also help reduce musty smells, condensation, and moisture problems that your air conditioner may not control well on its own.
Expect to spend around $1,500–$2,000, but in a humid climate, the comfort difference can be massive.

Choose a Variable-Speed A/C Unit
I ask every HVAC tech I run into “which system do you think is best for a home” and they all say the same thing… “Variable speed unit”
The system doesn’t just blast on at full power and shut off again.
It can run at lower speeds for longer periods, which helps maintain steadier temperatures and removes more humidity from the air. You get fewer aggressive on-and-off cycles and less of that freezing-then-hot feeling between runs.

Consider an Energy Recovery Ventilator
New homes are built tighter than older ones, which is great for efficiency but not always great for fresh air.
An Energy Recovery Ventilator, or ERV, removes stale indoor air and brings in fresh outdoor air while transferring some of the heating or cooling you already paid for.
That gives you better ventilation without simply opening a window and throwing conditioned air outside.
If your house is tightly sealed, I’d absolutely ask whether an ERV makes sense for your climate and design.

Think Carefully About Vent Locations
You don’t want air blowing directly onto your bed, across the dining table, into your face on the couch, or straight at the toilet paper roll every time the system kicks on.
I’d walk every room with the HVAC plan and think about furniture placement before the vents are finalised.
A powerful system with bad vent locations can still be annoying to live with every day.

Ask for a Proper Load Calculation
This might be the most important question you ask.
Don’t let the system get sized by square footage alone.
A proper load calculation considers your windows, insulation levels, ceiling heights, room sizes, orientation, sun exposure, air leakage, and climate. Those details determine how much heating and cooling the house actually needs.
An oversized system can short-cycle and struggle with humidity. An undersized one may run constantly and still leave the house uncomfortable.
Proper sizing is one of the biggest factors in comfort, efficiency, and humidity control, yet most people never think to ask about it.
