We’ve seen all kinds of setups, and each has its pros and cons. So let’s break down five of the most common microwave locations and help you choose the one that actually fits how you use your kitchen.

5. Lower Cabinet (built-in)

Some homeowners prefer to hide the microwave down low. It gives a clean look and keeps the counters free of clutter. But keep in mind that bending down every time you want to reheat your coffee might get annoying fast. I like this setup personally but understand why others may not.

4. Above the Stove

This has been a common setup for years as it saves space, keeps the microwave off the counter, and combines it with a built-in hood vent fan. But the ventilation on these units often isn’t great.

Instead of truly pulling steam and cooking fumes out of the kitchen, most of these built-in fans just trap the air, filter it a bit, and blow it right back into the room. That means lingering smells, poor air quality, and less protection for your cabinets over time. This placement is more about convenience than performance.

3. On the Countertop

There’s nothing wrong with putting the microwave right on the counter. It’s easy to access and doesn’t require any special cabinetry. The downside? It takes up space and can make the kitchen feel cluttered.

2. Built Into the Upper Cabinets

This is a popular option if you want it off the counter but still easy to access. It keeps the microwave at eye or waist level.. Just make sure the cabinet is deep enough and has proper ventilation. If not, you might be dealing with overheating issues down the line.

1. In a Drawer

Microwave drawers are becoming a go-to for custom kitchens and for good reason. They’re built into the lower cabinets, slide out like a drawer, and look sleek. You don’t need to lift anything up high or clutter your counters.

Some people say they’re harder to clean. But the convenience, design, and easy access make it totally worth it especially if your microwave gets a lot of action.
