I asked the Builder Brigade audience which finish they’d choose if they had to live with it forever, and one answer came up more than anything else:
Brushed nickel.
But the comments also made it clear that every finish has a tradeoff.
Brushed Nickel Was the Safest Pick
If I had to choose one finish for an entire house, I’d probably land here too.
Brushed nickel works with warm and cool colors, doesn’t swing in and out of style as fast as trendier finishes, and hides fingerprints and water spots better than polished options.
It’s timeless, durable, and easy to live with.
The downside is it can feel a little safe. Nobody is walking into your bathroom and losing their mind over brushed nickel, but you’re also probably not going to hate it five years from now.
If you want the least risky option, this is it.
Chrome Still Has a Loyal Following
Chrome got a lot of love from homeowners who see it as the true classic.
It’s crisp, clean, reflective, and usually one of the easiest finishes to match across different brands. It also tends to cost less than many specialty finishes.
The downside is it shows everything.
Water spots, fingerprints, toothpaste, and streaks all stand out fast. If you’re willing to wipe it down regularly, it looks sharp. If not, it can look messy pretty quickly.
Chrome has already survived decades of trends, which is hard to argue with.
Bronze Made the Biggest Design Statement
Bronze was the finish people seemed most passionate about.
Champagne bronze, brushed brass, oil-rubbed bronze, polished nickel, and unlacquered brass are all finishes that add warmth and can make a bathroom or kitchen feel way more custom.
In the right house, bronze is hard to beat.
But you need to understand what you’re buying. Some bronze and brass finishes are meant to change over time, while others are coated to stay consistent. Unlacquered brass develops patina, which some people love and others absolutely hate.
If you want something with character, this is your lane. If you want everything to look exactly the same forever, probably not.
Matte Black Was the Most Divisive
Matte black still has fans, especially if you want something bold and modern.
It creates contrast, looks great against light tile, and works well when you mix it with wood, brass, or stone.
But it also had some of the strongest negative feedback.
Hard water spots show up fast, scratches can be obvious, and some people said they regretted choosing it after living with it. Once the finish starts wearing or mineral buildup shows, it can be hard to ignore.
I like matte black in the right space, but I wouldn’t choose it blindly just because it looks good in photos.
Polished Nickel Was the Quiet Luxury Pick
Polished nickel wasn’t one of the original choices, but it came up enough that it deserves attention.
It has more warmth than chrome and a softer, higher-end look. It’s timeless without feeling basic.
The downside is cost and consistency.
Different manufacturers can produce slightly different tones, so mixing brands gets tricky. It can also show fingerprints and water spots similar to chrome.
If you want something more elevated than brushed nickel without going full brass, polished nickel is a strong option.

Brushed nickel won because it’s versatile, durable, and easy to live with.
