Some of the best laundry room upgrades are also some of the cheapest, but only if you plan them early.

Here are five worth doing….

Recessed Dryer Vent

This is one of the easiest wins.

A recessed dryer vent allows the dryer hose to sit inside the wall cavity instead of getting crushed behind the machine. That means the dryer can slide much closer to the wall, which saves several inches of floor space.

It also improves airflow because the vent hose isn’t kinked or compressed, which helps the dryer run more efficiently and reduces lint buildup over time.

2x6 Framing on the Plumbing Wall

Laundry room walls get crowded fast. You’ve got water lines, drain pipes, venting, electrical, and usually a dryer duct all fighting for the same space.

In a standard 2x4 wall, things get tight quickly.

Using 2x6 framing on the plumbing wall gives everything more room and helps avoid awkward pipe routing or crushed ductwork. It also makes it easier to insulate around plumbing and reduce noise transfer into nearby rooms.

Put the Laundry Room on an Exterior Wall

Dryers work best with short, direct vent runs.

Placing the laundry room on an exterior wall allows the dryer vent to exit the house quickly instead of snaking through the attic or multiple walls.

Shorter vent paths improve efficiency, reduce lint buildup, and lower the chance of future vent clogs. It’s one of the simplest ways to make the room function better long-term.

Add Hammer Arrestors

If your pipes bang when the washer fills, this is why.

Washing machines shut water flow off extremely fast, which creates pressure shock inside the plumbing lines. That’s what causes the loud thumping or hammering sound.

Hammer arrestors absorb that shock and protect the plumbing system from long-term wear and stress. They’re inexpensive during construction and even have screw-on versions if you’re dealing with the issue right now.

Install an Occupancy Sensor

Laundry rooms are the perfect place for motion-sensor lighting.

The lights turn on automatically the second you walk in and shut off once the room is empty. Most newer sensors also detect daylight, so they won’t turn on unnecessarily during the day.
