These are the five upgrades that barely move the budget but change how the house feels every single day.

Full-Size 36" Interior Doors
Once you've moved furniture through a narrow doorway, you'll understand this one immediately.
A 36-inch door gives you more room to move beds, couches, dressers, appliances, and everything else that somehow needs to make it into the house.
It also makes the home much more accessible if mobility ever becomes a concern. Wheelchairs, walkers, and even strollers navigate wider openings much more comfortably.

Zero-Clearance Showers
This is one of my favorite upgrades because it improves both appearance and functionality.
Instead of stepping over a curb every time you enter the shower, the floor transitions smoothly into the shower area. It creates a cleaner look, makes the bathroom feel larger, and eliminates a common tripping hazard.
Even if accessibility isn't something you're thinking about today, it's one of those features you'll appreciate if circumstances ever change.

French Doors Instead of Sliders
Personally, I'd take French doors over standard sliding doors almost every time.
They look more substantial, feel more custom, and provide much better airflow when opened. Unlike sliders, you can open the entire opening instead of only half of it.
They also tend to feel more connected to the outdoors when you're entertaining or enjoying nice weather.

Outlets with USB Ports
This one is simple.
Phones, tablets, watches, speakers, cameras all need charging.
Adding outlets with built-in USB ports means you don't have to hunt for charging blocks or give up valuable outlet space. It's a small convenience that gets used every day.
And compared to most upgrades, the cost is almost nothing.

Four-Foot-Wide Hallways
Most hallways are just wide enough.
A four-foot hallway actually feels comfortable.
Two people can walk past each other without doing that awkward side-step shuffle. Moving furniture becomes easier. The house feels more open. Even though you're only adding a few inches, the difference is surprisingly noticeable.

Find It All In One Place
Your builder won't add any of these unless you ask. And you won’t notice until the house is finished.
These are just some of the hundreds of upgrades in Ultimate Home Building Checklist. It helps you think through all of the decisions like these before they're locked in, so you don't finish your build and realize what you should have done differently.
