A well-designed pool area isn’t just about the pool. These five features take your outdoor space from basic to built-for-real-life. If you're in the planning phase, now’s the time to think through how the entire space will function long-term.

Covered Cooking Area

Add a covered cooking area near the pool to avoid cooking in direct sun or rain. A simple roof extension or pergola with a solid cover gives enough protection to grill year-round. Add a power outlet for a mini fridge or griddle, and hook up gas or water lines now while it’s easy.

Landscaping That Doubles as Seating

Raised garden beds made from block or stone can double as seating if built at the right height (18–22 inches). Use this trick along fence lines or pool edges to add permanent, low-maintenance seating. It saves space and removes the need for extra outdoor furniture that wears down over time.

Shower Under the Stairs

If you have a second-story deck, the space under the stairs is ideal for an outdoor shower. Install plumbing during framing, and slope the floor toward a drain. Use a simple slatted wood enclosure or concrete walls for privacy. This keeps grass, chlorine, and dirt out of the house and gives kids or guests a quick rinse-off spot.

Crawlspace Pool Storage

If your home has a crawlspace, plan to use part of it for pool storage. Add an exterior access door, lights, and a small slab floor for easy entry. It’s perfect for pool toys, deck cushions, umbrellas, garden tools, or even a hose bib if you want water access. Far cheaper than building a shed and way less visible.

Bathroom With a Brick Accent Wall

If your pool bath backs up to an exterior brick wall, leave it exposed inside to double as a design feature. You’ll save money on interior wall finishes and instantly give the space a modern, intentional look. This works especially well under a deck or next to the crawlspace storage area.
