Here are 6 laundry room features that are difficult or expensive to add after drywall.

Floor Drain

This is one of those upgrades you hope you never need.

If your washing machine hose bursts or the utility sink overflows, a floor drain gives the water somewhere to go instead of flooding your home.

It's also incredibly useful if you regularly mop the room or plan to wash pets inside.

Installing one during construction is simple. Adding one later usually means cutting into the concrete slab.

Recessed Dryer Box

This is one of my favorite laundry room upgrades.

A recessed dryer box allows the vent and connections to sit inside the wall so your dryer can slide much closer to it. That saves valuable floor space while preventing the vent hose from getting crushed or kinked.

It's inexpensive during framing and makes the room feel noticeably larger.

Appliance Drain Pan

Even brand-new washing machines leak sometimes.

A drain pan installed beneath the washer helps catch small leaks and directs the water safely to a drain before it damages your flooring or surrounding cabinets.

It's cheap insurance against one of the most common sources of water damage in a home.

Laundry Chute

If you're building a two-story home, don't overlook this one.

A laundry chute makes getting clothes to the laundry room effortless. Instead of carrying baskets downstairs every week, you simply drop everything through the chute.

Dog Wash Station

If you've got dogs, this can save your back and your floors.

A dedicated dog wash station gives you a convenient place to rinse muddy paws, bathe pets, or clean up after outdoor adventures without using your primary shower or bathtub.

Steam Closet

Steam closets are becoming much more popular in new builds.

They're perfect for refreshing clothes, reducing wrinkles, sanitizing delicate fabrics, and freshening garments that don't necessarily need a full wash.

If it's something you think you may want, plan the electrical and plumbing requirements early so you aren't trying to carve out space later.

The Best Laundry Rooms Are Planned Early

One of the biggest mistakes I see is people simply not knowing what's possible until it's too late.

By the time they discover these ideas, the drywall is finished and changing anything becomes expensive.

That's exactly why I created the Ultimate Home Building Checklist. It walks you through upgrades like these during the right phase of construction, so you don't have to rely on memory or hope your builder brings them up.
