Most Overlooked Outlets For New Home Builds

These are some of the most commonly missed outlets during a new home build. Some are easy to add now and really hard to add later.

Under the Sink

This one tops the list for me. If you’re planning to add a garbage disposal, smart faucet, water filtration system, or a hot water recirculation pump, you’ll need an outlet under the sink. Ask your electrician to add it now, you won’t regret it.

Closet Outlets

Closets are an easy spot to skip, but they’re incredibly useful. You might use it for charging a cordless vacuum, plugging in a dehumidifier, or adding motion sensor lights. They don’t take up much space, and once installed, they’re out of the way until you need them.

Kitchen Island Outlets

Adding an outlet to your island is a no-brainer. Whether you’re using a stand mixer, charging your phone, or plugging in a griddle for weekend pancakes, having power on the island makes life easier. Some people prefer outlets on the side, while others like pop-up options on top. Either way, add it while you can.

Outdoor Outlets

Outdoor outlets aren’t just for Christmas lights. You can use them for backyard decor, string lights, yard tools, electric smokers, or even a movie projector. Plan for at least one on all sides of the house, and think about placement near patios, porches, or sheds if you have them.

In-Drawer Outlets

This one is sneaky good. In-drawer outlets work great in the kitchen for charging stations or in a bathroom vanity for hair tools. No more cords stretched across counters. If you’re planning a junk drawer, appliance drawer, or makeup drawer, adding power now keeps things organized and modern.

Under the Soffit

If you like decorating for the holidays, an outlet under the soffit is a game-changer. It lets you plug in Christmas lights cleanly, without extension cords hanging down the side of your house. You can even tie it into a switch inside the garage so you can turn it on and off easily.

One Chance to Get It Right

Outlets might seem like a small thing, but they’re hard to change later. It all adds up. And the more you plan ahead, the better your house will function day to day. Need help remembering all these little upgrades? They’re all included in The Ultimate Home Building Checklist!
