Most people picture storm shelters as a big swing-out door in the backyard. But this one hides right under your garage floor. It’s completely out of the way until you need it. Then it becomes the safest place in your home during a tornado or major storm!

These were designed and created by Storm Safe Shelters.

How It Works

The shelter is installed underground, directly beneath your garage slab. You can still park your car on top like normal. When a storm warning hits, you slide open the heavy-duty lid and step inside. It’s strong enough to protect against flying debris and powerful winds.

Space-Saving Design

One of the biggest perks is how little space it takes up. You don’t need to sacrifice a room in your house or lose garage storage. Everything stays hidden until you need it. Inside the shelter, the stairs are removable, so you can create more space if needed. There’s also a handrail for safety, which can be removed to make it easier to bring in pets, supplies, or small kids.

Designed for Emergencies

The shelter has built-in air vents so you can breathe easily while waiting out a storm. There’s also a manual jack system inside, just in case storm debris falls on the lid. You’ll still be able to open the door from the inside and get out safely. It’s designed with real emergencies in mind.

Installation and Cost

The ideal time to install this type of shelter is during the new build, before the concrete slab is poured. It can still be added to an existing home, but that involves cutting into the slab, which makes it more expensive. On average, expect to spend around $8,000 for a standard-size unit, depending on features and installation costs in your area.

Not for Everyone

If you’re extremely claustrophobic, this setup might not feel comfortable. Some people prefer above-ground storm rooms for that reason. But if you want a secure option that doesn’t take up space or change your floor plan, this garage-floor shelter is hard to beat.
