We recently asked the Builder Brigade audience a simple question: What’s one thing you paid extra for that you’d do again WITHOUT hesitation?

We got hundreds of responses. Here’s what homeowners said was worth every extra dollar.

Heated Floors Were the Clear Favorite

Heated floors dominated the responses.

Bathrooms, mudrooms, basements, even garages. Once you have them heated, you never want to go back.

It’s not a feature guests notice right away, but you’ll feel it every cold morning. Stepping onto warm tile instantly changes how the space feels.

Whole House Generators Brought Peace of Mind

Generators came up repeatedly, especially in homes in rural areas or storm-prone regions.

You can think of it less as a luxury and more as insurance. When the power goes out, life keeps moving. The fridge stays cold, the sump pump keeps running, and work doesn’t suddenly stop.

Generators usually don’t feel essential during the build. They become essential during the first outage.

High Quality Windows Changed Everything

Upgraded windows were another feature homeowners said they appreciated immediately after moving in.

Larger windows, better glass packages, and thoughtful placement made homes feel brighter while still staying efficient. You can also look forward to fewer drafts and significantly less outside noise.

Because windows affect comfort, lighting, and efficiency, this is one of the few upgrades you notice every single season of the year.

Tankless Hot Water Became a Daily Luxury

Tankless systems showed up frequently in the poll, especially when paired with recirculation loops.

You’ll have endless hot water and faster delivery at sinks and showers. It’s not the most exciting upgrade during construction, but it quickly becomes something you get used to.

Once you experience unlimited hot water, going back to a traditional tank feels like a downgrade.

Better Insulation Paid Off Immediately

Insulation upgrades came up far more than most people expect.

Think spray foam air sealing, mineral wool between rooms, better exterior house wrap, and sealed crawlspaces. These improvements make homes quieter, more comfortable, and easier to heat and cool.

You’ll be able to notice how stable the temperature feels throughout the house.

Structural and Layout Decisions That Stood Out

Some of the most praised upgrades weren’t finishes at all.

You’ll want to make sure you think about taller ceilings, deeper bays, and garages finished to house standards when building.

Extra garage space almost never gets regretted. Higher ceilings and taller doors also made homes feel dramatically more custom. Ten-foot ceilings paired with eight-foot doors are gold.

Zero-entry showers were another favorite because they combine clean design with long-term accessibility. Walkout basements and in-law suites are also smart ways to future-proof the home for guests, rental income, or multigenerational living.

Kitchen Upgrades Delivered Daily Value

Kitchen upgrades focused less on looks and more on usability were another clear favorite.

Running cabinets to the ceiling added valuable storage while giving the kitchen a finished appearance. Replacing lower cabinets with deep drawers made everyday items easier to access.

Soft-close hardware was another small upgrade that becomes something you never want to live without. Butler’s pantries and sculleries add prep space and keep appliances out of sight.

Two dishwashers sounds excessive at first, but they become incredibly useful once you start hosting gatherings.

Bathroom and Laundry Upgrades That Made a Difference

Bidet toilets and heated seats are surprisingly life-changing. Steam showers and wet rooms, and heated towel racks bring a spa-like experience into daily routines.

Laundry rooms with built-in cabinetry, pull-out hampers, and well-planned layouts also make everyday chores noticeably easier.

Outdoor Living Extended the Home

Your outdoor living space is an area to invest in.

Covered porches and screened patios made outdoor spaces usable in far more weather conditions. Adding fireplaces, heaters, or misting systems extended those spaces even further into colder or hotter months.

Automatic patio screens and power shades were also popular for controlling bugs and sun exposure without losing the view.

Outdoor kitchens and gas hookups made entertaining easier and eliminated the need to constantly move between the patio and the indoor kitchen.

Electrical Planning Was a Hidden Win

Many homeowners said thoughtful electrical planning paid off more than they expected.

Dimmers throughout the house allowed lighting to adapt to different moods and activities. Under-cabinet lighting made kitchens both more functional and more polished.

Stair lighting improved safety while adding subtle design impact, and exterior soffit lighting enhanced curb appeal without harsh floodlights.

Extra outlets in closets, islands, and outdoor areas also prevented many small frustrations often experienced later.

The Upgrades That Protected the Investment

Some of the smartest decisions weren’t visible at all.

Independent inspections during the build, choosing a better builder, upgrading framing materials, and installing durable roofing systems like standing seam metal roofs were all decisions that protected the investment long-term.

Storm shelters also appeared frequently in higher-risk regions.

These upgrades may not show up in photos, but they provide peace of mind for years to come.

Build for How You’ll Live, Not Just How It Looks

The upgrades homeowners loved most weren’t necessarily the ones that looked impressive during construction. They were the features that improved everyday living.

Warm floors. Quiet rooms. Reliable power. Comfortable showers. Better lighting.

When you’re planning a build, it’s easy to focus on finishes. But years later, comfort and functionality are what people appreciate most.

The Ultimate Home Building Checklist helps you think through upgrades like these in the right order and during the right phase of construction so important decisions don’t get missed before walls close up.
