These features help your house function better, save you money down the line, and prevent a lot of headaches. If you’re early in the planning phase, this is your sign to get these in place before the slab is poured or the landscaping starts.
Gutter Drains
Burying gutter drains is a must if you want to move water away from your foundation. But don’t use the cheap black corrugated pipe. It crushes easily, especially if you’re working in the yard later or driving over it. Use PVC or SDR35 pipe underground instead. They’re stronger, last longer, and keep the water moving where it needs to go. This one change solves a long list of water issues before they even start.

Concrete Around the House
If it’s raining, you shouldn’t have to walk through mud just to get to the backyard. A narrow concrete path around the entire house gives you access no matter the weather. It also protects your foundation from pooling water and erosion. Whether you're bringing in groceries or your kids are chasing the dog, this upgrade gets used way more than you think.

Yard Drains
If your yard tends to stay soggy after rain, add some yard drains that tie into your main drainage system. These inlets catch standing water and help direct it away from the house. It’s a cheap fix during the building process, but an expensive and messy one if you wait until after the landscaping is done.
Conduit Under Concrete
If you’re pouring a walkway or driveway, drop a stick of empty conduit underneath it. That one move means you can run wiring under the slab later if you ever want to add lighting, power at the driveway gate, or anything else on the other side. Without conduit, you’re stuck either ripping out concrete or running exposed lines around it.

French Drains
These go in along the base of a slope or anywhere water tends to pool. It’s basically a gravel trench with a pipe at the bottom that captures and moves groundwater before it builds up. Add a French drain along the back or side of your home if there’s a hill nearby and it’ll protect your foundation and keep your yard usable.
