When building a new home, it’s easy to overlook small features that can make a big difference. A laundry chute is one of those features! As you’re probably aware, you can just drop dirty clothes from upper floors directly to the laundry room, making laundry day much easier.

The Benefits Of Laundry Chutes

Plain and simple…No more carrying baskets down stairs! Instead of piles of laundry in bedrooms or bathrooms, you can simply drop clothes down the chute and let them land in the laundry room.

Creative Ways to Add a Laundry Chute

Adding a laundry chute is easier on a new build than retrofitting an existing home. If the builder knows early, they can frame out an area above the laundry room so the chute is integrated into the design and blends in. Look at your plan early so you can try to include the chute into cabinetry. They can also be wall mounted with a small cabinet door.

If your bathroom backs up to the laundry room, you could easily incorporate a passthrough in the vanity wall to create a chute. Here is an example of a  passthrough vanity drawer:

Make sure the chute is well-ventilated to prevent musty odors. Also, consider safety if you have young children or pets, place the chute higher up and out of reach. A  lock or child safety mechanism for added security isn’t a bad idea either. Lastly, be sure the chute is the right size and located in an area that doesn’t interfere with your home’s layout.

Upgrade to the Laundry Jet

For a more high-tech option, consider the Laundry Jet. This system works like a central vacuum, sucking clothes through tubes directly into the laundry room. It's perfect for multi-story homes and works much like the tube system at banks. It’s a fancier option but can make the process even more efficient.
