Here are ten essential features that will elevate the primary bedroom and make it the ultimate retreat.

Laundry in the Primary Closet

Adding a washer and dryer to your primary closet streamlines the laundry process and makes it easy to keep everything neat and organized. Once your clothes are finished, you’re steps away from hanging them up! It’s a small feature with a big impact—something we should have been doing all along!

Tray Ceiling Lighting

Tray ceilings give the room a high-end feel, and adding lighting within them takes it to another level. Sure, some may say it’s a dust collector, but this lighting makes your bedroom look like a million bucks, casting a soft, ambient glow around the room without overwhelming brightness.

Window Spacing

Properly spaced windows make all the difference, especially if you have a king-sized bed. Spacing windows about 94 inches apart (for a king size bed) is ideal for creating the perfect balance on either side of the bed without needing to block the views. Measure you’re current bed just to be sure some bed frames are larger than others.

Bedside Switches

Having light switches within arm's reach from your bed is a game-changer. There’s nothing better than being able to turn off the lights without having to get up. If you forgot to add them during installation, no worries—a Lutron starter kit with a wireless switch can solve this easily: https://geni.us/LutronLightingKit

Closet Lights

Motion-activated lights in your closet are incredibly convenient. These occupancy sensors replace your standard light switch. They turn the light on when it detects motion or the door opens, then off after no movement or an allotted amount of time as passed. The duration of the light can be adjusted as needed. This is one of my favorite upgrades, it’s cheap and easy to install.

Automatic Shades

If you’re hardwiring your automatic shades, make sure to select your shades early so the correct wiring is installed. These can require 12-volt or even Ethernet cables. Imagine waking up to the perfect level of sunlight every morning at the touch of a button!

I’ve installed these aftermarket ones from Amazon and they work alright but I’d much rather have a pre-wired set up!

Outlet Behind the Bed

This is a must if you have an adjustable frame or want to add accent lighting under or behind your bed. Having an outlet behind the bed keeps cords hidden and ensures that everything runs smoothly without visible clutter.

Four-Corner Lighting

Recessed lights in the four corners of the bedroom provide a subtle, balanced light without a glaring beam directly in your face when you lie down. This setup offers the perfect ambiance and makes the room feel inviting and restful.

Outdoor Light Switch

A switch inside your bedroom for the outdoor flood lights is perfect for those late-night bumps in the night. One quick flick and your yard is illuminated, adding both peace of mind and security.

Camera Monitor in Closet

For an elevated sense of security, consider adding a camera monitor in your closet. By running a video cable into the closet, you’ll be able to monitor cameras around the house with ease, giving you peace of mind and easy access to your security feed right where you store your essentials.
