What you should know

When it comes to building your dream home there’s a ton of unknown knowledge that builders may forget to tell you. For example, architectural shingles have a longer lifespan and more durable than the 3 tab variety.

Avoid closing off potential storage areas. This is easily overlooked if you don't know what you’re looking for. If you see an area that looks like it’s closed off and could be used for additional storage, ask the builder. It’s not a dumb question.

Lastly, don’t forget about the gutter drains. Ask your builder if there’s a plan in place for that. No one likes a freshly flooded lawn right after move in. Yard drainage is one of the biggest issues homeowners deal with after moving in.

Recap

  • Skip the 3-tab shingle roof, go for the architectural shingles

  • Don’t close off potential storage areas (under the stairs)

  • Have the gutters drain underground
